2018 Seminar Topics

  • 21st Century Fertilizer Technology......And Beyond! (60 mins)

This talk provides an update of commercially-available granular fertilizers and results of field evaluations, including, but not limited to; certified organic, sustainably organic (GreenTRX), enhanced efficiency (stabilized/coated), and calcium/magnesium silicate products. Future fertilizer products arising from utilization of societal waste streams will be described. Granular fertilizer programs for golf course tees, fairways and roughs will be presented.

  • Turfgrass Micronutrients: Roles & Requirements (60 mins)

This talk is self-explanatory in that I will cover the most commonly-limiting micronutrients in cool-season turfgrass systems, micronutrient deficiency symptoms (numerous high-quality photos), cultural procedures that facilitate micronutrient availability, fertilizer selection strategies to overcome micronutrient limitations, and micronutrient fertilizer programming.

  • Managing Nutrients: 4Rs, Soil Testing, and Other Tools (60 minutes)

4R Nutrient Stewardship (applying the Right source, at the Right rate, at the Right time, in the Right place) provides a useful framework for managing the fertilization program on your property. Along with soil testing and other tools, this can help you make the most of your fertilizers, providing efficient nutrition that helps build healthy plants and safeguards against nutrient loss.

  • What’s in the Bag? (60 minutes)

All fertilizers are not the same. Understanding exactly what’s in the bag of fertilizer that you buy and apply is critical in getting the results you want. In addition, it can have a major impact on the economics of your operation, maybe even more than you think. Consider everything that goes into that bag of fertilizer, from the sources of nutrients, to the percentage of enhanced efficiency technologies, to the overall N-P-K analysis. See how these factors can affect not just performance, but also the total cost of keeping your turf green and healthy.

2018 Seminar Speakers

  • Dr. Max Schlossberg, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Turfgrass Nutrition/Soil Fertility

Completed his undergraduate and graduate work in the southern US (Texas A&M and Univ. of Georgia), yet amassed the majority of his work experience on golf courses in the Chicagoland area.

Now in his 12th year at Penn State, Max teaches Soils and Turfgrass Nutrition to students in residence and over the World Campus each Spring. His primary research foci include fertilizer and liming agent evaluation and nutrient management programs to optimize turfgrass quality, stress resistance, and nutrient uptake efficiency.

Max’s research program has recently identified cultural methods for rapid soil pH adjustment, how plant growth regulation compliments late season N fertilizer applications, foliar fertilization strategies for Penn A-series putting greens, causes and remediation of soil water repellency, and fate of foliar and granular urea fertilizer applications to turfgrass systems.

When away from the office and lab, Max enjoys hiking, biking, and camping with his family and playing golf and billiards with the boys.

  • Dr. Eric Miltner, Ph.D., CCA; Agronomist, Koch Turf & Ornamentals

Eric Miltner is an Agronomist with Koch Turf & Ornamental, a leading manufacturer of Enhanced Efficiency Fertilizers. He coordinates field research and provides technical support on fertilizer technology and use both within KAS and externally with customers, turfgrass managers, and other turfgrass industry interests. Prior to a career move into the fertilizer industry in 2011, Dr. Miltner spent 17 years in university research, extension, and teaching at Washington State University and Utah State University. He earned his Ph.D. at Michigan State University, B.S.A. and M.S. degrees at the University of Georgia, and is a Certified Crop Advisor (CCA) through the American Society of Agronomy.

Continuing Education Credits (CEC’s) will be provided.
